The sun comes up Another day The sun goes down The world is grey. The streets are dead Past six o’clock The houses all From the same stock The world is grey, the world is grey out here in the suburbs the world is grey A cool blue glow From every room Bought this whole house In the mining boom Your Four Wheel Drive Your trophy wife Your 5-day week That’s your whole life. The world is grey It’ll never change You fill your life with things You’re still bound by chains The world is grey, the world is grey out here in the suburbs the world is grey Well I’m the same as you I’m just getting by Living day by day Until the day I die The world is grey, the world is grey out here in the suburbs the world is grey We all commute Spend our lives in lines That’s the truth of it We’re wasting half our time This vast suburban sprawl It’s just not what it seems Yet we still opt into This Australian dream The world is grey And I’m part of that It’s the life I know And I can’t take it back The world is grey, the world is grey out here in the suburbs the world is grey

I’m an easy, going guy In the office environ-ment Pleasant convos, humble pie Always saying just what we meant “How’s your weekend? “You went where?” “I’ve heard high praise for their donuts” But there’s someone, always there Who just makes me go nuts It’s Phil Getting right up in my grill Always thinking that he knows what’s best Leaving notes on my desk I could kill That dick named Phil I can picture him still With his selection of novelty ties His middle-management vibe Looking back he’s the one Who dissolved my last goodwill That dick named Phil

Drunk 04:56
We’ve all been here before You know this score That’s why I’ll have one more I’m drunk at a party Felt my anxiety rise Ate fifteen party pies It’s getting hard to disguise That I’m drunk at a party I had beer I had wine I had whiskey and moonshine I had a pretty average time But I’m drunk and I don’t mind Saw people point and stare I don’t care They’re everywhere I’m drunk at a party I poured another drink Told them just what I think Threw up in their kitchen sink I’m drunk at a party I had beer I had wine I had whiskey and moonshine I had a pretty average time But I’m drunk out of my mind I stumbled out the gate Could tell it was getting late Time I made my escape From being drunk in the suburbs on a Fridaaaaaaay Niiiiiight!

Burned 02:54
I loved a girl I thought she was the one She was my star She was my bright blazing sun Under the surface It wasn’t worth it If you look too close you’re gonna get burned Love can wax Love can wane It can bring you joy Or nothing but pain Under the surface Ask is it worth it? If you look to close you’re gonna get burned Time goes by and you think you’ll be fine Then she sneaks into the back of your mind You try to shake it off, but you know it’s never enough Once you slip it’s a total eclipse of the heart So love with care Treat yourself right Specially when you’re loving In the middle of the night Under the surface Make sure it’s worth it If you look to close you’re gonna get burned Time goes by and you think you’ll be fine Then she sneaks into the back of your mind You try to shake it off, but you know it’s never enough Once you slip it’s a total eclipse of the heart So when you love a girl Make sure she’s the one Get to know her properly It’ll save you in the long run Cause under the surface Make sure she’s worth it If you look to close you’re gonna get burned.

Picture this, if you will, us upon jarrah decking Out the back of a house that I built with my heart There is sun streaming down and I’m holding your hand This is what I could see from the start We got old, as you do, but we lived a whole lifetime Surrounded by family and friends all the way And we dreamed and we lived and we did it together That’s why I wanted to say… I love you, what if we were married Forever in each other’s life I could be your husband If you want to be my wife We’d own a small vineyard where we’d grow our own food On the weekends we’d walk through the hills high above I’d make jams, you’d carve wood and we’d sell them at markets We are living the dream, we’re in love There are times we will fight but we’ll do it with grace With respect, and kind words, we will solve all our ills You and me, me and you, it’s a perfect arrangement But we can’t make it happen until… You love me, what if we were married Forever in each other’s life I could be your husband If you want to be my wife

Flying Solo 03:15
I go home alone every night I’m not okay, I want to be alright I’m better off, if loves out of sight That’s why I’m flying solo A single meal is easy to prepare A tub of ice cream that I don’t have to share I walk around my place in only underwear That’s why I’m flying solo Now you may ask me don’t you get lonesome? And yes it’s true I do get down But if I wanted to, I could sit here have a few And maybe even paint the town… but I don’t want to. Romantic strolls on my own through the park Curl up with movies on my own after dark I thought I’d found someone with that spark She’s left me flying solo Now you may ask me don’t you want someone? All I do is think about that It’s been so long, I haven’t had no-one Except for Chairman Meow, the neighbour’s tabby cat. Romantic strolls on my own through the park Curl up with movies on my own after dark I thought I’d found someone with that spark It seems that I’m flying solo. I said she’s left me flying solo. Nothing left but to fly solo.

Lunacy 04:48
I’ve found you out here in the world, I am a boy you are a girl Just take my hand I want to love you She says: You don’t know what it is you seek, I’ve only given you a peek Just let it go my dear The time we took I’d take again, I see you more than just a friend I know it’s crazy but that’s what we do If this is lunacy Then baby I’m mad When did the good go bad? If this is lunacy Then I’m crazy for you But to end all this, and all this could be Wasn’t something I thought we’d do I never thought I’d be that guy, until I saw you in the sky I think you’re beautiful please stay She says you know that never was the plan, and while you’re quite a lovely man I always disappear Without you everything’s mundane, and everything just stays the same My life is just a shade of grey Who do I think I have to blame, the only one who can start change Is me If this is lunacy Then I’m unhinged Like a moth who flew too close to the light If this is lunacy Then I’m insane But I’ve gotta be to love you And to let you go again

Curtain Call 01:09

about

Complete lunacy or a total eclipse of the heart? Either way, it’s a hell of a love story.

A man wakes in his grey apartment in outer-middle suburbia to realise he’s living a life that has lost its twinkle.

Variegated Productions is over the moon to present the soundtrack of its theatrical cabaret show that weaves a tale of astronomical love and self-discovery. Channelling smoky New York jazz clubs, it combines lamenting lyrics, evocative storytelling, and a man falling in love with the wrong celestial body.

Martin Sims Award nominated in 2016, it stars St John Cowcher (Laika, My Robot, The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik) and features music by Brett Smith (Lighthouse Girl, The Eisteddfod, Hir).

Come and see where the evening tides take you.
